Dental implants consist of two parts. The first part is the ‘abutment’. The abutment is a screw-shaped titanium piece that is designed to replace the root that you would find on a healthy tooth. The abutment is inserted into the jaw, as a natural tooth would have been, and fixed into place.

The second part is the dental crown. An implant crown is the same as any other dental crown that would usually cover a damaged or broken tooth. However, in this case, it is fitted to the new titanium abutment. When both pieces are secured, this forms what is known as a dental implant and is a permanent fixture that you should never need to remove.

More about Dental Implants

As dental implants are porcelain, they will potentially last longer than your remaining healthy teeth. As with your natural teeth, the more you take care of them, the longer they will last. So treat them as you would your teeth, and they will last a lifetime.

There is no minimum or maximum age. However, we do not advise those under the age of 18 to have implants, as their jaw and bone tissue is still not fully developed. Similarly, although there is no maximum age, the factor that will limit your ability to have a dental implant will be the condition of your gums and jawbone.

Yes. As you had your teeth removed when you had your dentures fitted, the process may be a little quicker than normal. This is because no extractions will be needed. Using the “all on four” technique, several dental implants can be used, and two brand new arches of porcelain teeth fitted to create a permanent replacement for your old dentures.

Although you may experience some mild discomfort, this should not be painful. The procedure will be carried out under local anaesthetic, and we will make sure you are comfortable before carrying out the treatment.

Post-treatment, over-the-counter painkillers, can help while the initial healing process takes place.

Dental implants are a permanent fixture and designed to be in place for life. A dental bridge is also a fixed solution. However, they may need to be replaced in the future. A bridge uses the teeth on either side of the missing tooth to support the bridge. Therefore, if anything happens to these teeth in the future, the bridge will be affected and may need to be replaced. Dental implants are more expensive than dental bridges. However, budget aside, dental implants are usually a better choice.

Some of the frequent feedback we hear from our patients is that they love how personal the practice is. We pride ourselves in making you as comfortable as possible. We understand that dental implants are a significant procedure, so we don’t rush you. Take your time and try to relax. You’re in good hands.

We are well equipped to carry out dental implants. We have the latest dental X-ray equipment all in-house, so there will be no need for third party referrals to get these essential X-rays. We can do them all from our clinic.

Our dental implantologist is one of the leading surgeons in the UK. As well as our facility in Milton Keynes, we also have the use of a state-of-the-art dental hospital in Oxfordshire should we need it.

Finally, we pride ourselves in exceptional patient care, and this is why we have over 100 5-star reviews on Google and other review platforms.

As with any surgery, there are risks involved with the initial procedure. However, any risks can be managed when using an experienced team who carry out dental implant procedures regularly.

Once the procedure is complete, there is no downside of dental implants. The dental implant will look and function in the same way as your other natural teeth. And, cared for correctly, will last a lifetime.

“Why are dental implants so expensive?” is a common question, and the answer is: for a few reasons. Firstly, the materials used to create the dental implants, titanium and porcelain, require a specialist laboratory to craft them into precisely the right fit for your mouth. This process makes every case bespoke, and requires dedicated experts’ time to create your new dental implants.

The fitting of your dental implants also requires a highly trained dental specialist. Dental implants cannot be carried out by a regular dentist. To be able to fit them a dentist needs many hours of additional training to qualify as a dental implantologist.

Dental implants are the only permanent solution for replacing missing teeth. However, some other methods are available:

Dental bridges – A dental bridge uses the same porcelain material to create a multiple tooth dental crown. This dental crown is placed by using the two healthy teeth either side of the missing tooth as support teeth to set the dental crown. Once bonded these teeth help form a bridge over the missing tooth, hence their name, dental bridge.

Dentures – Dentures can also be used instead of dental implants. However, they will need to be removed regularly for cleaning and sleeping. Although still used in some cases, they are becoming less and less popular today.

All on 4 is becoming a popular treatment now. Also referred to as permanent dentures, all on four uses 4 dental implants to fix a full arch of porcelain teeth. All on 4 is not a minor procedure, and lots of planning is involved in getting the required result. Due to this, and the cost of the materials, all on 4 typically starts at £15,000 per arch. We do have some excellent finance packages available to help spread the cost of this treatment.

For smaller dental implants cases, the choice is yours. We do offer ‘conscious sedation’ for patients who would prefer it. Conscious sedation does not mean you are asleep, just heavily sedated. And in most cases, you won’t remember the procedure once you recover. For more complex dental implants cases, you would be fully sedated. However, this is usually reserved for multiple implants or all on 4 treatment.

Most adults who have healthy gums are suitable for dental implants. However, if you are a smoker, have gum disease, or have had radiotherapy to your jaw in the past, you may not be eligible for dental implants immediately.

Gum disease is treatable, and we may recommend a series of dental hygiene visits to restore your oral health before proceeding to dental implants.

Dental implants can be fitted in one day and are called same-day dentistry. We do offer this procedure. However, it is only suitable for specific patients who will need to see our dental implantologist at our dental hospital in Oxfordshire.
